Earth Day Outreach (7th)

Driving Question:

What species are worth saving?

Project Overview:

You will develop a campaign to inform the public about the role of the Endangered Species Act. Each team will develop a website and infographic as a means of outreach to share arguments around the protections put in place by this legislation. These resources will communicate the role that specific species play in their ecosystem, why its population is threatened, and evaluate action steps that have been taken to protect the species.

Rationale:

“The only way to save a rhinoceros is to save the environment in which it lives…

                                                                                                         -David Attenborough

The Endangered Species Act has helped to protect many of our nation’s species on the brink of extinction, but its impact does not stop there. Maintaining biodiversity is an essential part of keeping our planet’s ecosystems in balance. With Earth Day coming up on April 22nd, this project will help communicate the importance of protecting endangered species while allowing us to develop a deeper understanding of interdependent relationships in ecosystems; cycles of matter and energy transfer in ecosystems; and ecosystem dynamics, functioning, and resilience.

“You cannot protect the environment unless you empower people, you inform them, and you help them understand that these resources are their own, that they must protect them.”

-Wangari Maathai
